The first and only olympic games held in the Netherlands was in 1928. It was an iconic edition for many reasons: it was the first edition where the olympic flame was lit using a simple match, the first event where the P-parking sign was introduced and last but not least it was the first time that women were aloud to participate in atlethics.
An ode to "the flying housewife"
Dutch athlete Fanny Blankers-Koen (1918-2004), nicknamed The Flying Housewife, won four gold medals at the 1948 London Olympics and broke no fewer than 12 world records and fifty-seven national records in her career.
